Dear Simi Valley Schools Families:
There is a new Netflix television miniseries that some of our students may be watching. Called “Thirteen Reasons Why,” the show follows a high school teen who commits suicide. Each of the 13 episodes depicts the reasons why the young girl chose to take her life, and reveals difficult and sensitive topics in the telling, such as bullying, rape, drunk driving and, ultimately, the girl’s suicide.
We want to make sure that you are aware of this show. We do not recommend that youth watch this series because of the sensitive nature of the topics discussed. However, if your children are watching the series, engaging in thoughtful conversations with them about the show is vital. It provides you with the opportunity to help them process the issues addressed, including the consequences of certain choices.
We wanted to make you and your family aware of the many community resources available for struggling young people. Some of them include:
As well, the SVUSD website, www.simivalleyusd.org/suicideprevention, has suicide prevention resources online. Also, each year, every 8th grader in our schools receives suicide prevention instruction through a partnership with the Simi Valley Police Department. During its first year, we made the program available to every 7th through 12th grader, so all current high schoolers have already received this program.
Lastly, your school psychologists and counselors are always available to speak to you or your child about these important issues. We are here to help, especially for an issue as troubling as teen suicide. Please make sure your children know that they can reach out at any time for help.

Special Bell Schedule - There will be a special bell schedule for the next several weeks due to testing and Portfolio Day. Here is the bell schedule for 4/24 through 5-12. Check back here for more bell schedule updates.
Just a reminder about our Parking Lot. Please be courteous to other drivers and aware of students crossing to their cars. Safety should come before everything else. Also, please follow directions on the signs regarding which lanes are for pass through only and which lanes are safe for pick up and drop off.
Another reminder that toys should not be brought to school. Many students have purchased "spinners" and are learning how to do all sorts of amazing tricks using them, but they are considered toys and may be confiscated. Please encourage your students to leave all toys at home so that school can continue to be a productive learning environment.
SVUSD is offering summer school for middle and high school students. For information regarding summer school please visit simivalleysummerschools.weebly.com.
VCOE is also offering a wide range of FREE summer camps for students exiting 8th grade through 12th grade with a focus on many of the pathways taught throughout the county. Did we mention that they FREE? Check them out at https://cec.gosignmeup.com/Public/Course/Browse. By the way, these summer camps are FREE!
Remember to check Aeries and the School Calendar weekly to keep up on important school events and your student's information. Students are bringing home their yellow Advisory folders to help them plan for their week's SSP activities and need your guidance. Students have also completed their Naviance and the district mailed parent account information for you to use to view and mentor your students through middle and high school as they grow and prepare for college and career beyond school
Here are some important links for your info.
